The first
out-of-town visitor to Isle de St. Rose was don Tristan de Luna. In the
summer of 1559, he sailed up the Gulf from Mexico, his 11 ships loaded
with gear and food for survival.
The adventurous Spaniard, within three years, was
forced to abandon camp. The locals (at that time, the Ochuse, later the Panzacola) were leery of the new arrivals and therefore didn't trade with them or teach them survival skills, so de Luna and his band failed to utilize the abundant food supply that the natives thrived on.

Gulf Breeze Area Schools The Gulf Breeze area's five schools consistently score well above state and national averages on all standardized examinations and have earned "Five Star School Awards" repeatedly. They are all recipients of the "Golden School Award" for volunteer hours and enjoy the distinction of being "Red Carpet Schools" which means they are community and parent friendly. The Santa Rosa County School Board offers pre-kindergarten through adult education programs in the community. Year-round literacy activities are available through the adult learning center. The Community School offers a variety of classes such as boating safety, art and complete childcare. Our school serve a diverse population and also serve students with special needs.
